Jet 2 is a rising artist out of Los Angeles with a gift for wordplay. We got a chance to talk to Jet 2 about his career, his next project, and his relationship with Jamal Cristopher.

1) Jet 2, you’re a really dope lyricist. When did you start to get into rapping?

I appreciate that so much! I tried rapping when I was about eight years old. I recorded a really weak track with my dad and figured rap wasn’t for me, but I started typing random thoughts down and printed a few for my friends that really liked it in the 7th grade. When I got to Dorsey High School, I wrote a song called Sippie Cup just for fun that really caught on with all of my classmates around the school and that was when I knew I may have a gift.

2) How do you come up with a verse? What is your process towards making a song?

When I make a song, I like to step into a zone mentally. I visualize each word in a picture. For example, I would paint a vivid picture of a scene that I either went through before or would like to go through, then I capture that emotion and start recording. I usually don’t have the words at first, but they pour in as the emotion becomes more vivid and clearer.

3) Are there any solo projects from you that we should be looking forward to anytime soon?

I actually have The Mission Back to the Terminal, which is dropping on my birthday because I feel it is a very personal album of mine that I have recorded. The single “High School Sweetheart” that is now available is a part of the album and it gives a good picture of the place I was at mentally during the recording of the album. Within the next couple of years after I see how The Mission goes; and it’s looking like it’s gonna go really well, I’m planning on working on a project titled Social Network Culture. I have a really dope concept for that project already mentally and I just feel like all the components will fall in place. I’m praying for some production from Pharrell and Timbaland by that time!

4) An L.A. artist that is really gaining steam is Jamal Cristopher and you have collaborated with him a lot, especially on his latest album 2nd period. How did your relationship come about?

Around the earlier part of my career, I dropped a mix-tape titled “Tha Propellar 2,” and around this time Jamal Cristopher was still at Dorsey High and I had graduated a couple years prior. One of my good friends Fred, who is also a rapper by the name of F-Red told me that Jamal really enjoyed my music and would really like to work with me. Possibly a few months after I finally agreed, we exchanged contacts and Jamal had a track that really stood out to me called Promenade and he featured me on the remix. That track was recorded in separate studios. For a follow up, Jamal sent me a track titled “Don’t Blame Me” which I instantly recorded once I heard the first three seconds of the instrumental! Jamal hadn’t even recorded his part yet, but he gave me the concept and I ran with it. I had the track with my verse only for about three weeks before he came to my home studio to record his part and that was the day we really built a good relationship and discovered that we had plenty of the same aspirations and goals and I shared with him a few stories about the people and things that inspired me and he did the same. It’s been magic ever since!

5) Should we expect more work from you two together in the future?

Aww mann!!! Work form us!? We’ll never work! haha I’m joking! We have so many… and I mean so many tracks recorded! By now, it’s possibly nearing 30 tracks and we’re linking up this weekend when he touches down from Merced. Jamal and I really have a bunch of unreleased tracks and one that is really my favorite that I would drop the name of, but I don’t want to give anything away. A full length project is something that you can expect from us in the near future though. I really enjoy working with Jamal Cristopher and I’m glad that we linked up, that man has plenty of talent and a very solid foundation of fans! People come up to me asking about him everyday and that just makes me feel humbled and inspired daily, we just keep pushing each other to the top and when we get to that pinnacle, you can really expect us to do things to shut down the game! I’m planning on producing some things for his debut album as well! I really appreciate you guys for having me.
